Very often, we see this comment in our cooking paste reviews – the product is great, but the jar is so small! When the product arrives, many of our customers are surprised because they hadn’t been expecting a jar that would fit so comfortably in their hand.
Why don’t we make bigger jars? Wouldn’t they be more cost-effective and keep customers happier? You see the thing is, we’ve deliberately kept our jars small.
Mekhala’s Cooking Pastes are Concentrated (and Sometimes Potent!)
Our Organic Asian Cooking Pastes are made from real ingredients sourced from local farms. Being close to the source means our herbs and spices are fresh, and more flavorful. Each teaspoon of Mekhala paste is concentrated, and those that contain chilies pack a potent kick. In fact, you only need 2 heaped teaspoons of Mekhala paste to make enough for 2 to 4 serves. Each ‘tiny’ 3.53oz / 100gm jar can make enough for 8 to 10 serves. And since you only need a couple of teaspoon’s worth each time you pop a jar open, the mouth of the jar is just the right size!
Fun fact: We’ve toned down the spice level of our spicy pastes a fair bit, much to the amusement of our Thai employees.
Just the Right Serving Size
Mekhala products were created to take most of the labor out of meal prep so mealtimes can be easy, breezy affairs. This is especially important considering many now cook for just for just 1 or 2 people at a time. Whether you’re making dinner for date night or packing lunch to the office, considering you’ll only need 1 to 2 teaspoons of cooking paste to make a quick and delightful meal, it’s actually more cost-efficient and less wasteful to keep our paste jars small. This way, you won’t have half-used jars languishing in the back of your fridge, only to be found and tossed out months later, contributing to food waste and suboptimal use of resources.
No Fillers
We don’t bulk up our pastes with fillers. Just wholesome ingredients, the way nature made them. Also, we’ve consciously made our pastes pastes, not sauces. Because the great thing about pastes is that they are so versatile. With their concentrated flavors and minimal liquid content, they can be used as a marinade, in stir-fries, to season soups, braises… your imagination’s the limit!
